You might tell yourself you need to lose weight first, feel more confident, have everything figured out, or wait for “the right time.” But confidence doesn’t come before showing up. It’s built by doing the thing — imperfectly, consistently, and honestly.
In a recent episode of The Self-Made Life Podcast, I sat down with Susy Robson, a brand photographer and marketing strategist who helps entrepreneurs show up confidently through photos that actually feel like them.
Here’s what every service-based business owner should know about brand photography — and why waiting is holding you back.
One of the biggest misconceptions about brand photography is that you need to look polished, flawless, or “Instagram-ready.”
The truth?
People connect with real people.
Brand photography works best when it reflects who you are in your current season — not who you think you should be someday. Your audience doesn’t want perfection. They want familiarity, warmth, and trust.
When someone lands on your website or Instagram, they’re subconsciously asking:
Do I feel safe here? Do I trust this person? Do I see myself in them?
Photos answer those questions instantly.
Confidence isn’t a personality trait — it’s something you build through repetition.
Susy shared that most people hate being in front of the camera at first (yes, even photographers). The shift happens when:
• you feel prepared
• you understand where the images will be used
• you’re supported through the process
That’s why a strong brand shoot includes planning, wardrobe guidance, conversation, and intention — not just showing up and hoping for the best.
The more you show up, the easier it gets.
If brand photos haven’t worked for you in the past, it’s usually because of one of these:
• Booking a shoot without planning where the photos will live
• Only getting vertical images that don’t work on websites
• Skipping hair, makeup, or wardrobe prep
• Treating the shoot like a task instead of an experience
When photos are created with purpose, they can support your website, social content, media features, email marketing, and beyond.
One of the most powerful parts of this conversation was around community over competition.
Entrepreneurship can feel isolating — especially when you work alone. Being surrounded by peers who understand your challenges, celebrate your wins, and keep you moving forward makes showing up feel lighter.
You don’t need to do business alone. And you don’t need to figure everything out before you begin.
Let this be your permission slip.
You don’t need to wait until:
• you feel more confident
• your business is “bigger”
• your life is quieter
Your brand deserves to be seen now — exactly as it is.
